She’s baaaaaaaack.
Far be it from me to question Miss Coulter’s obviously sincere and strongly held convictions. I’ll leave that to ultra-paranoid liberal John Nichols, who thinks she has some kind of sinister ulterior motive for her pseudo-endorsement of Clinton.
She is a sly woman this Ann Coulter. And she is not entirely insincere. While she may not really believe that Clinton is more conservative than McCain, she undoubtedly would rather have Clinton as president. That’s because Clinton presidency would be a full-employment program for the right-wing attack machine for which she is Cog No. 1. And a McCain presidency, by defining a different and more responsible conservatism, could marginalize Coulter and her kind.
Now if I were to ever even imply that Ann Coulter was an unscrupulous woman (which I won’t, because I believe she is among the most honorable modern pundits), I would suggest that there might be a simpler explanation having to do with her relative irrelevance this past year or so. Think about it – wasn’t the last time she made big news when she called Edwards a faggot? A lot of people expressed a lot of outrage and then since then she’s pretty much faded into the background. She’s like one of the big stars from the season one cast who in season two just shows up in the background a lot so that the writers can remind us that, oh yeah, she’s still on this show, and no, she’s not dead yet. Hell, her last book (published a few months ago under the title SOMEBODY PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!!) barely made a ripple.
So if I were cynical enough to ascribe an ulterior motive to Miss Coulter, I might humbly suggest that she just figured out that everyone’s bored with her current ultra-right-wing shtick and this is her way of trying to be shocking and provocative now. And if that were the case, well, it worked, didn’t it? I mean, people are writing about her again.
Of course, I’m not actually that cynical. I’m sure that Coulter is merely calling for what she believes would be best for this country she loves so deeply.
