The Stuff of Nightmares

Remember, kids: the best way to understand the modern right-wing is less as a set of consistent principles and more as a set of powerful personalities that everyone else sort of lines up behind. Part of the reason why they’re in such disarray right now is because it’s unclear exactly who those personalities are supposed to be. For a while it was Bush, but once his approval dipped somewhere into the low 20’s and the Republican primary started up, they gratefully coughed him up like a bad hairball. Then they bounced around between stooges like Giuliani, Romney and Huckabee, before finally settling on McCain. McCain’s improbably primary victory was largely the result of a lack of plausible, or even remotely acceptable, alternatives.

And then McCain lost, and the Republican base decided he wasn’t so awesome a standard bearer after all. And right now they’re adrift, looking for a daddy. So who shall it be? The Mittmeister? The Huckster? The Ghost of Gingrich Past?

It’s hard to say. But the list of speakers at CPAC should give some hints. That’s usually a pretty good barometer for who the standard bearers are. And who’s the very first announced guest this year?

Drumroll, please. (SPOILERS FOLLOW)

GAH! The fuck?!

There are … there are just no words.

I guess I can’t say I’m shocked. Saddened would be a better word. Deeply saddened.

  1. I get the sense that even the Republican Party isn’t crazy about Palin, they’re just trying to get some momentum going until they can survey the extent of the damage this past election has done to their party and realistic candidates step up. In the meantime though we’re likely to hear from and about Palin…a lot!
