Nisoor Square, Revisited

I was lucky enough to be at TPM when the story about the Nisoor Square massacre broke–if you care to check out the archives, Spencer Ackerman and Paul Kiel did some really stellar reporting on it over at Muckraker.

This story, as much as any other single incident, really perfectly captures how monstrous and absurd our occupation of Iraq has been. And now it will get a similarly monstrous and absurd ending. The Blackwater employees or gunned down innocent civilians in the middle of Baghdad deserve to rot in prison, but there also needs to be some kind of reckoning for their corporate overlords and the State Department officials who thought letting these mercenaries run around without oversight like it was the Old West was a good idea.

I’m not particularly sanguine about any of that happening, though. The only real consolation is that most of those people in State will be out of a job in a little over a month.
