I don’t find those sorts of arguments to be really compelling rebuttals to Utilitarianism. Which isn’t to say that I actually am a Utilitarian myself—far from it. It’s just my beefs lie elsewhere. If there’s enough interest, maybe I’ll do a post on that at some point.
On high ethical standards: occasionally, utilitarian arguments like those made by Peter Singer are used as reductios to show that utilitarianism is either counterintuitive or unworkable. What do you think about that?
